The Tuxedo Urchin (Mespilia globulus) is a colourful and highly effective member of the marine clean-up crew, prized for its algae-eating abilities and unique behaviour.
This small, round urchin is easily recognised by its striking banded pattern, often featuring shades of blue, black, red, or purple between rows of short spines. Its compact size and vibrant appearance make it a standout addition to reef aquariums, adding both texture and movement to the tank.
Tuxedo Urchins are excellent herbivores, constantly grazing on nuisance algae, film algae, and even coralline algae. As they move across rockwork and glass, they help maintain a cleaner aquarium and support a balanced ecosystem. A particularly interesting trait is their tendency to carry small objects such as shell fragments, rubble, or algae on their bodies for camouflage, giving them plenty of character.
Peaceful and generally reef-safe, they are suitable for most community marine setups. However, due to their strength and movement, they may occasionally dislodge unsecured coral or decorations, so a stable aquascape is recommended.
Best kept in established aquariums with a good supply of natural algae, Tuxedo Urchins may require supplemental feeding with algae-based foods if natural sources become limited. Stable water conditions are essential for their long-term health.
