Cleaner shrimp

The Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis), also known as the Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, is a highly popular choice for reef aquariums due to its striking appearance and useful role within the tank.

Featuring a vivid red body, bold white dorsal stripe, and long flowing antennae, this shrimp adds both colour and movement to any marine setup. It is well known for its natural cleaning behaviour, where it removes parasites, dead tissue, and debris from fish. Many aquarists enjoy watching it establish a “cleaning station,” with fish actively visiting to be groomed.

Peaceful and reef-safe, Cleaner Shrimp are suitable for most community aquariums and can often be kept in pairs or small groups in larger systems. They are active and visible, typically found perched on rockwork or coral, waiting to interact with tankmates or scavenge for food.

This species is relatively hardy when kept in stable water conditions and is ideal for both beginner and experienced hobbyists. As an omnivore, it will readily accept a variety of foods including frozen, meaty, and high-quality prepared diets. Care should be taken when acclimating, as they are sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters.
